Following the Master Plan 2040, ETH is confronted with a decision: New buildings or rethinking the existing. Our decision is clear - we don't need new buildings, but innovative solutions for existing structures. The garage is not a relic of the change in mobility, but an opportunity for transformation. Instead of constructing the planned HIC building as the Center for Students and Entrepreneurs on top of the garage, we are looking for the potential in the existing.
Our vision: a garage that lives. Through precise interventions with light openings that respect the existing trees and the column grid, creating green inner patios, we foster an inviting working atmosphere.
Instead of rigid structures, we promote a flexible environment: a fixed framework of workshops, sanitary facilities and a Café-Lounge is complemented by open, freely adaptable areas. The garage becomes an organism that can constantly adapt and change. Bicycle traffic crosses the open floor plan and brings a dynamic into the building. The result is a fusion of working and meeting, of inside and outside.
A newly designed façade strengthens the connection to the surroundings and the Ringstrasse while pavilions with spiral staircases break down the boundary between the underground and the campus.
